I encourage everyone to write personal vows. This is a wonderful way to express your love in your own words and to declare to everyone present exactly how special your spouse is to you (very!) If one or both of you have children you can also incorporate them into your vows or even write vows to the child as well.
Personal Vows
These are your vows, they are special. Take your time and write something meaningful to you. It doesn't matter if no one else knows what you are talking about, as long as your partner knows what you mean, and what they mean to you.
Here are some examples:
You can fill in the blank:
What I love most about you is _______, _______ and _______. My hope for the future is ________________________________. I promise ___________________________________.
You can follow this pattern:
- Initial statement about the past.
- Statement about your partner.
- Promise to each other.
- You can recite poems or songs to each other, or recite a poem together in turns.
- You can also recite a poem or song in unison or write something together to say in unison.
- Define something important to you or your relationship (i.e. love, trust, etc.) then elaborate on that theme and what it means to you as a couple. You can each do this with different words or take turns speaking.
- Tell a funny/cute/sweet story about how you met or your first date and what that means to you now or how it will shape your future.
